Chapter 12 ~ Riayn

It was nearing the end of January, and I was busy creating new items at the bakery, teaching Jess and Pam how to bake the new treats, and working feverishly on the party planning.

Who knew there were so many things to do to get a town party organized! Besides the menu, we had signs to make, decorations to order, tickets to sell, and we needed musicians and an MC to host the event. Plus we were still trying to wrangle another man to join the auction.

By the end of each day, I was exhausted by everything, but it was a happy exhausted. I felt like I finally belonged someplace. Now if I could only find someone to share that feeling with me.

I sighed as I rubbed my sore feet. I’d been standing in the kitchen since five that morning, so I’d basically been on my feet for twelve long hours. How nice it would be if someone could rub my feet, or my neck. I stretched my neck from side to side, trying to loosen the tight muscles.

I would have loved nothing more than to climb into bed and fall fast asleep, but I had promised Linda that I’d come over for dinner. She’d been begging me to join them for two weeks, and she’d finally talked me into it, and even asked me to bring dessert—which was why I was running a little late, and needed a shower. I just hoped that the hot water would ease my sore muscles enough to help me make it through the night.

At five minutes till six, I rushed out the door carrying my cherry heart tarts drizzled in chocolate. It was something new I’d been working on for the party, and also for the shop. I called them Love Bites.

I was so excited about my new recipe, and Linda, Ian, and Megan were going to be the final taste testers. When I pulled up at their place, there was a police car and a pick-up truck parked out front, and I wondered briefly if there was a problem.

I rang the doorbell and heard young boys’ voices yelling that someone was at the door, two seconds later, the door swung open and there stood a child about the age of six. “Well, hello there.” I glanced over his head, about to ask if this was Linda’s house when Megan came barreling toward the door with Casey right behind her.

“Riayn, I’m so glad you could make it,” Casey gushed as she reached the door.

“Who are you?” The little boy asked while Megan reached for the plate of tarts.

“Oh, these look so good!” Megan spun around to disappear with them into the kitchen but stopped abruptly and turned back, “And hello, Riayn!”

“Hi, Megan,” I called to her as she took off again, then I looked back down at the little boy who was still waiting for an answer.

Casey put her hands on the boy’s shoulders and moved him out of my way so I could take my coat off.
